Journey into Psychotherapy

Direction & Focus

The direction and focus of therapy will vary based on each person’s unique challenges, needs, and emotional makeup. That said, I believe there are three key elements that form the foundation of meaningful and effective therapy.

Three Elements

Insight of Personal Development

Insight of Personal Development

Insight of Personal Development

One, we are largely shaped by the relationships and experiences we had growing up. To understand why we think, feel, or react the way we do, it’s important to explore where those patterns began.

By recognizing how the past has influenced our sense of self and how we learned to cope, we can begin to untangle old habits from present-day situations. This kind of insight helps us realize we have the power to respond differently and make healthier choices moving forward.

Integration of Painful Feelings

Insight of Personal Development

The second core aspect of therapy is learning to process and integrate painful emotions. We all grow up with unmet needs or emotional wounds to some degree.

When caregivers are unable to fully meet our emotional needs or help us cope with difficult experiences, those feelings often remain unprocessed. Integration means learning to recognize, tolerate, and express these emotions in a safe and healthy way.

Over time, this helps us regulate our emotions instead of suppressing them or reacting impulsively. Emotional regulation is essential for psychological well-being and personal growth.

Experiential Learning

Experiential Learning

The third key element of therapy is experiential learning. As we make sense of our past and process painful emotions, we begin to test new ways of behaving—both in and outside of therapy.

These real-life experiments help us challenge old beliefs shaped by early relationships, showing us that the present is not the past.

While life will still bring challenges, we come to realize we are no longer the vulnerable children we once were. We gain a deeper sense of strength, clarity, and choice in how we respond to stress, conflict, and disappointment.

Dr. Cortez integrates a range of evidence-based approaches to ensure therapy is both effective and personalized:

  • Person-Centered Therapy – provides a space where you feel truly heard and supported, fostering trust, self exploration, and empowerment

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) – a powerful method for processing trauma and distressing memories, promoting adaptive integration and emotional relief

  • Trauma-Focused CBT – helps clients process and reframe trauma-related thoughts, reduce distressing symptoms such as intrusive memories or hypervigilance, and develop healthier patterns of thinking and coping.

  • Mindfulness – cultivates present moment awareness, emotional regulation, and cognitive clarity, enhancing insight and resilience

  • Somatic Experiencing – supports regulation of the nervous system and the release of stored tension, helping the body and mind restore equilibrium

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) – a structured approach for addressing anxiety and avoidance behaviors, enabling clients to confront triggers safely and build confidence

Practice & Outcomes

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Practice, Practice, Practice!

By cultivating present moment awareness and reducing habitual reactivity, mindfulness enhances emotional regulation, attention, and self awareness while lowering stress. In clinical practice, this leads to tangible outcomes: clients respond more effectively to challenging situations, make clearer decisions, and strengthen their capacity to pursue personal and professional goals. Across schools, community agencies, integrated care, and higher levels of care, a mindfulness informed, systems aware approach helps individuals develop sustainable skills for resilience, adaptability, and meaningful growth.

Therapeutic Outcomes

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Practice, Practice, Practice!

While every client’s journey is unique, research shows that therapy can produce measurable improvements in emotional, cognitive, and relational functioning. Clients often experience increased self awareness and insight, enhanced emotional regulation, and stronger coping strategies for stress and life challenges. Therapy can also improve interpersonal effectiveness, foster more satisfying and resilient relationships, and support a deeper sense of well being and life satisfaction. Over time, these outcomes contribute to lasting personal growth, greater adaptability, and an increased capacity to engage meaningfully in both personal and professional spheres.
